David Curran

|
| David Curran | Focus: Specializing in road racing, recreational road riding, and mountain biking.
Certification:USAC Level 2 |
I came to endurance sports by way of training for a half marathon at age 28. At 250lbs, sedentary for most of my life, and a recent ex-smoker, I was hoping to "get healthy". After completing the half marathon I continued running until an injury led me to riding my 10-year old bike until I could get back to running. I quickly got the bug and began riding, and then racing regularly. As an engineer by trade, I quickly became interested in the "why's" of training and athletic performance. I then found myself regularly helping my friends and family with their training. This has since progressed to coaching road and mountain bike racers, and triathletes.
Coaching Philosophy:
As a network engineer, father of three, and husband, I know how how hard it is to come by training time. My goal as a coach is to help my athletes balance their desire to compete at their highest ability with their responsibilities to work and family. I tend to work with serious recreational and amateur racers who are dedicated to competing and training.
My particular approach to training is to begin with setting realistic, specific, and attainable goals. From these goals we'll work together to formulate a realistic training plan to achieve those goals. And during the season, we'll work together, when necessary, to adjust your plans and goals according to the realities of life for the amateur athlete.

Jason Leslie

| Jason Leslie |
| Focus: Road cycling and Time Trial |
Starting in high school back in 1986, I started my passion for endurance sports running cross country for Wade Hampton High School which eventually led to road cycling and starting the cycling club while there. Being invited to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs as a junior USCF racer, I was fortunate enough to learn the basics of what the sport is all about. While studying at Furman University, I raced for the original cycling club team. Always striving to improve and finding innovative ways to train, I continued my passion for the sport mainly focusing on time trialing. I discovered the benefits of power training back in 1999 and have continued to learn new ways to implement and structure training based on using this data. Other skills learned along the way include the use and value of motorpacing, altitude training, and also experience honing the aerodynamic position on the bike in a wind tunnel, which helped me to attain several SC state championships in time trialing. I enjoy being able to give back to the sport I love and find that through teaching others the lessons I’ve learned over the last 24 years, I strive to increase others’ skill level and ultimately their satisfaction with this great activity.

Kate Ross

|
| Kate Ross | Focus: Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Fitness, Nutrition
|
Cycling has always been a part of Kate's life. She is a mountain biker at heart, but has spent the past 5 seasons racing on the road. In 2006 she was recruited from the mountain bike scene to race on America's Dairyland, a professional women's development team out of Wisconsin. It was at this time where she learned about how fun it can be to race her bike on a team. This team continued for one more season and eventually transitioned to Lip Smacker Professional Women's team. Kate rode as a development rider on this team as well. She has traveled throughout the US and did many races on the NRC calendar where she supported some of our nation's best cyclists. In 2009 she was offered a position on the Degaini Women's team in Melbourne Australia to guest ride for the Bay Crits and a number of other races. There she was on the podium for some of their local races and even walked away with a most aggressive rider award!
Kate now calls Greenville, SC home landing here after living in Boulder, CO and Asheville, NC. She loves the training and the cycling community here in Greenville and doesn't want to leave! (She has been known to miss the snow a bit).
As a coach, Kate is excited to help people achieve their goals racing, improving fitness, bike handling skills, nutritional, or even bike maintenance. She has passion and genuinely cares about the development of her athletes as a whole. She is looking towards a successful coaching year and will continue to race her bike at the elite level with Team Pepper Palace, based out of Asheville, NC.

Josh Whitmore
|
|
| Josh Whitmore | Focus: Road cycling, mountain biking
Certifications: USA Cycling Certified Coach (level III), Wilderness First Responder, American Mountain Guides Certified Rock Guide, Wilderness Education Association Certified Outdoor Leader, Leave No Trace, Master Educator
 |
Josh first achieved racing success as a junior, twice being named to the US National Team to compete in the Mountain Bike World Championships. From 19-22 Josh competed as a professional mountain bike racer, following the US National Cross Country Circuit and domestic World Cups. During this time, he also dabbled in triathlons and road races, making some guest appearances for professional road teams. Lacking the genetic gifts to make it big as a full time bicycle racer, Josh gave up racing seriously for several years to pursue other life goals.
Now as the Director of Outdoor Programs at Western Carolina University, and with plenty of flexibility to train, Josh has returned to a high level of bicycle racing. In 2006, he once again represented the USA in the Mountain Bike World Championships, earning a 9th place finish in the 30-34 age category. Although he still holds a professional mountain bike license, Josh now races mostly on the road as a category 1 rider for the Globalbike Cycling Team (www.teamglobalbike.org), and is also an avid cyclocross racer.
Coaching Philosophy:
In addition to riding and racing bicycles, Josh has a passion for teaching and helping others discover their athletic potential and realizing the joy that athletic activity can bring to their life. Always willing to share, Josh is full of useful information gleaned from his experience. As a person known to devote a high attention to detail, you can't help but learn and improve when working with Josh.
Josh is available to customize a coaching program specifically for you. Whether you are preparing for that big century ride, just getting started with racing, or are a seasoned veteran of road, mountain bike, or cyclocross racing, Josh can help you achieve your goals with efficiency.

Alex Strouhal
|
|
| Alex Strouhal | Focus: Road cycling, mountain biking
Education: Bachelor Degree in Physical Therapy
|
Alex was introduced to bicycle racing at an early age, watching road races come through his hometown in Czechoslovakia before immigrating to the United States. He brings to GCC 25 years of experience in road and mountain bike racing. There was a break in racing while attaining a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy in Cleveland Ohio.
His training and coaching philosophy is simple, enjoy the ride, find your goals, sharpen your focus and succeed. Training can and should be fun as long as all the goals are addressed and periodically reassessed. Alex understands that cycling is a passion for most riders. But also realizes that time constraints and other obligations need to be considered in any training program.
Overuse injuries in cycling are fairly common. Such a problem prompted Alex to start his career in Physical Therapy. With his PT background, Alex is a great coach for balancing strength and flexibility. Innovation through personal experience!

Kyle Knott

|
| Kyle Knott | Focus: Road cycling, track
Education: Health and physical education teaching license
|
I have always been in love with sports since a young age and have tried just about every sport at least once. While in college I competed in cross country, diving, triathlons, and cycling. I went to James Madison University to earn an exercise science and leadership degree and completed my health and physical education teaching license at Mars Hill College. While competing in triathlons I was a part of the ITU Long Course World Championship Team for USA before an injury sidelined me for 6 months. During that time I fell in love with cycling and decided to try it out competitively and had quick success going from a category 5 to category 1 in just over 2 years. Last year while competing for Mars Hill College I won the Division II Collegiate National Championships in the criterium, individual omnium, and team omnium. I recently took part in the opening of the Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill, SC and plan on making track a focus of mine now that we have a “home track”. I am currently working for Boyd Cycling and racing for the Domestic Elite Team Athletix benefiting Globalbike.
Coaching Philosophy: I am a firm believer in positive thoughts and visualization, they have helped me reach my goals in such a short time and I know they can help you achieve yours. I also believe that it is about quality not quantity, most people have lives outside of sport and I would love to help you find balance to be successful in both. I would enjoy coaching you to achieve your goal(s) whether it is winning a championship or just becoming more physically active. I believe with proper training both on the physical and mental aspects of sport you can achieve the success you want!
Taking the first step towards a goal can sometimes be the hardest one, so if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Simon Bennett

| Simon Bennett | Focus: Triathlon, Cycling and Specialized Swim Coach
Certifications: Bronze License Swimming Coach – Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association, Level 1 Triathlon Coach – Triathlon Australia, USA Cycling Certified Coach, Level 4 Certificate in Fitness Trainer, Level 4 Certificate in Sports Coaching, Level 4 Certificate in Community Recreation
|
Simon began his athletic career in 1996 as a swimmer. In 1997 he was diagnosed with Type 1
Diabetes and has never let it slow him down. After a very successful career as a junior
swimmer Simon was asked by a coach who worked with the Australian World Championship
and Olympic teams to join the Elite High Performance Swim program based in Melbourne.
While as a member of the Elite National Swimming Program Simon placed in the top three of
several competitions and his consistency and focus on stroke technique became evident.
This proven experience and attention to technique lead to the request by Elite Coaches,
Triathlon Clubs and Swim Teams to have him coach their athletes. During his time as a coach
and owner of Pisces Specialized Fitness, Simon worked with clients who accomplished
personal bests, qualified for Triathlon World Championships in Kona, won National
Championships, and broke World Records in Swimming. Simon taught strength and
conditioning to coaches that worked with the Melbourne Storm, a National Rugby League
Team, National level swim teams and Regional running programs. Injury prevention and
rehabilitation was a primary focus of his coaching. He has written and published training
manuals and nutrition programs for endurance athletes used in a one on one and a team
setting.
While coaching clients for Triathlon Simon found a love for the bike. Simon began competing
in local cycling events and his results drew the attention of Tim Decker, a coach to many of
Australia’s young Pro Tour riders. In eight months Simon went from an entry level to a
Professional category cyclist. In 2009 he left his coaching career to pursue an opportunity to
combine his passions for cycling and Diabetes outreach with the Team Type 1 Cycling Team
based in the United States. That same year, he was part of the RAAM 8 man team that broke
the World Record for the transcontinental crossing (5d,9h,5m) that is still held today. In 2011
while on a trip to Africa with Team Globalbike Simon achieved his second World Record in
becoming the first Type 1 Diabetic to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in less than 4 days beating the
previous by 2 days.
US Para-Cycling Program- Affiliate Coach- coached at National Championships in June 2011
and at the United States Olympic Training Center October 2011
Coaching Philosophy: “I have always thrived on overcoming challenges and thinking outside
the box to accomplish what others think may be out of reach. Competing in 2 different sports
at the Elite level while balancing my Type 1 Diabetes has given me a unique insight and
wisdom to problem solving, time management and goal setting that I believe can help my
clients achieve their potential. I use my passion, dedication and attention to detail as a part of
every training session for my clients. Bringing a strong, healthy, injury free athlete to their goal
event is a primary focus of my coaching. For me, it’s all about prior planning and preparation
mentally and physically which will prevent poor performance. I see my client and myself as
two equal parts of one team working towards a common goal.”
Simon now calls Greenville, SC home after marrying his wife Jennifer in 2010. He will
continue to race his bike with Team Globalbike on the elite level and proving that anything is
possible.
